Type approval¶
The 2025 revision adds a formal "same type" framework (Chapter 9) that did not exist in the 2020 edition. This is the practical answer to "if I change X, what do I have to retest?" — the standard answers it with a 17-condition checklist (9.1) and a partial-change matrix (9.2 / Table 7).
This section also covers two long-standing flexibilities that matter for type approval: testing a battery subsystem instead of a full pack (6.1.6), and testing a pack with the surrounding body frame included (6.1.3, 8.2.4.1, 8.2.7.1.1).
Pages¶
- Same type determination — the 17 conditions in clause 9.1 that define "same type".
- Retesting per Table 7 — the partial-change matrix from 9.2: per condition not met, the supplemental tests required.
- Using a subsystem — when a battery subsystem can substitute for a full pack/system in testing (6.1.6).
- Testing with the vehicle body — when the body frame can be included as part of the test object (6.1.3, 8.2.4.1, 8.2.7.1.1).
