The tests

GB 38031-2025 defines 24 safety tests — 7 at the cell level (clause 8.1) and 17 at the pack/system level (clause 8.2). Each test has a method clause (8.x) and a corresponding pass-criteria clause (5.x).

Quick entry points

  • All tests at a glance — every test, every parameter, one table. Best entry point for engineers planning a campaign.
  • Index by clause number — the same data sorted by clause. Best when you already have a clause citation.

By level and domain

Cell-level tests (8.1) — 7 tests

Open the cell-level section →

Tests on individual battery cells. Pass criterion: should not catch fire or explode (no insulation requirement at this level).

Pack & system tests (8.2) — 17 tests

Open the pack/system section →

Tests on assembled battery packs or full systems. Most share a universal pass criterion: no leakage, no housing crack, no fire, no explosion + insulation ≥ 100 Ω/V (DC) or ≥ 500 Ω/V (AC). Three exceptions worth knowing about — see the cheatsheet.

Sub-domains:

  • Mechanical — vibration, shock, collision, compression, bottom impact 🆕
  • Environmental — damp heat, immersion, temperature shock, salt fog, high altitude
  • Electrical protection — over-temperature, over-current, external short, overcharge, over-discharge
  • Thermal stability — external fire, thermal propagation

Before you test

If you're planning a test campaign, read Before you test first. It covers test environment, sample preparation, SOC adjustment, pre-treatment cycles, and the insulation resistance procedure that runs before and after most tests.
