The battery-enclosure story that matters most¶
The public record suggests that FE is trying to solve the same customer problem through more than one architecture, not by betting on one material religion. That is strategically smart. The FE release says the cover used a new glass-fiber epoxy SMC with strong fire resistance and flowability; FE led CAE validation including side impact up to 350 kN, modal, bending/torsion stiffness and impulse pressure under thermal runaway. The regulation pull is real and strengthening. China’s official public sources show that GB 38031-2025 was released on March 28, 2025 and takes effect on July 1, 2026, replacing GB 38031-2020. Public official summaries state that it strengthens thermal-diffusion requirements, adds bottom-impact testing and fast-charge-cycle safety elements, and pushes the philosophy toward “no fire, no explosion” with alarm requirements and verification/reporting expectations. On the materials-screening side, UL Solutions states that UL 2596 specifically addresses thermal and mechanical performance of EV battery-enclosure materials and underpins BETR and Torch-and-Grit testing. The hardest unsolved technical problems FE is probably dealing with¶
The public evidence suggests FE’s real technical bottlenecks are the same ones you already understand from battery-pack structures, just amplified by materials uncertainty:
First, material-card maturity. FE’s 2024 crash-card presentation says explicitly that lack of accurate FRP crash material cards causes designers to prefer metals. That means your best technical angle is not to debate whether metals or composites are “better.” The better question is where each architecture breaks first: tray crush, flange leakage, insert pull-out, thermal-event penetration, stack-up sensitivity, warpage-driven sealing loss, or subsystem correlation failure.

The capabilities FE must possess to be credible are visible in the job ads and presentations. A Munich CAE role from 2023 requires strong knowledge of LS-DYNA or a comparable explicit solver, deep familiarity with HyperMesh and HyperView, lightweight-structure optimization, and material characterization/modeling with external partners. A Japan development-lead role requires body-in-white development, crash dimensioning, joining/fastening expertise and Catia V5. Questions that remain unanswered from public sources¶
Public sources do not clearly answer the following:
- FE’s current ownership percentages, including Mitsui’s exact stake.
- FE’s audited revenue, EBIT and profitability by business line from primary filings that are easily accessible without paid portals or login barriers.
- Which FE battery-enclosure programs, if any, are in named automotive series production today.
- Whether FE owns any protectable software/data products that are already commercialized.
- The exact extent of FE’s in-house test capability versus partner-lab dependence.
- The current internal software stack beyond LS-DYNA, HyperMesh/HyperView, Catia V5 and generic FEA/CAD/LCA references.
- Whether the “two large PP parts” IAA 2025 concept is already customer-specific, production-nominated, or still demonstrator-stage.
- How large FE’s benchmark/teardown business really is in revenue terms.
- How the new Shanghai presence is performing commercially.
- Whether the robotics-intelligence work is a true new business line or still exploratory.
Those are the gaps you should try to close in the meeting.
